Continuity in Action: A Framework for Multi-Generational Success

Masterclasses are an additional extra, add it on to your conference registration

This masterclass will provide family business leaders with a hands-on deep dive into what it takes to build a business that lasts. Professor Justin B. Craig will guide you through practical tools like the Continuity Canvas to help you connect the dots between wealth, strategy, talent and governance. Through real examples and group discussion, you’ll explore how to adapt, innovate and plan for the long term.

In this deep-dive masterclass, Justin builds on the frameworks from Continuity Model Generation, Leading a Family Business: Best Practices for Long-Term Stewardship, and his most recent work, The Science of Business. You will engage with the Continuity Canvas and related tools to explore how to integrate wealth, strategy, talent and governance into cohesive plans.

Through interactive discussion, case studies and practical exercises, family business owners and leaders will walk away with strategies that can immediately be applied to strengthen continuity across generations.

You'll grow entrepreneurial skillsets and expand your mindset in an experiential academic environment, systematically develop and support a long-term strategy for your family business, acquire the mindset and skillset to adapt and innovate in the face of transition, and understand the unique role of entrepreneurship and multi-generational enterprise in the broader economic and social context.

This masterclass also provides opportunities for group learning in a collaborative environment, allowing for plenty of shared learning from peers facing similar opportunities and challenges.

Masterclass Speaker

Prof. Justin B. Craig

Professor of Entrepreneurship, Bond University

Dr. Justin Craig has worked in, on, with and for family enterprises since he was eleven. In addition to positions at Bond University, where he is a Full Professor of Entrepreneurship and Family Enterprise, he has held faculty positions at Oregon State University, Northeastern University in Boston, and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University (where he holds a Visiting Professorship). He completed undergraduate degrees in Business and Psychology (with Honors) at Griffith University and a Master’s in Counselling and a PhD in Behavioural Science at Bond University. He has Co-Directed the Australian Centre for Family Business at Bond University (with Professor Ken Moores) and the Centre for Family Enterprises at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management (with Professor John Ward).

Dr. Craig has authored 51 peer-reviewed academic publications, numerous book chapters and teaching cases, and has co-edited several books, all aimed at better understanding the challenges of entrepreneurial business-owning families across the globe.

His 2021 book (Wiley Publishing) Continuity Model Generation: Integrating Wealth, Strategy, Talent, AND Governance Plans delivers a cohesive and comprehensive plan for family business leaders who seek to improve the chances of sustaining success across generations. Incorporating four distinct but closely related plans, Continuity Model Generation shows family businesses how to manage their strategy, their wealth, their talent, and their governance to achieve multi-generational success.

The book also offers:

  • A coherent framework (Continuity Canvas) for the integration of its multiple plans affecting every critical aspect of the family-owned or controlled business.
  • Straightforward and practical frameworks, meta-frameworks, and cornerstones to ground your family business’s strategy.
  • A variety of templates, checklists, and forms to organise your thinking and strategy.

His 2017 book (with Ken Moores) Leading a Family Business: Best Practices for Long Term Stewardship (Praegar Publishing) considers the differences between leadership in family enterprises and non-family enterprises; the entrepreneurial capabilities needed by executives in family-based firms; and the use of power, identification, and motivation in managing their responsibilities both at home and in the workplace. The book details two frameworks to better understand the best practices of leading a family business: a firm- level frame focused on these four critical areas of difference (architecture, governance, entrepreneurship, and stewardship) and an individual one that mirrors these in terms of the skillset and mindset successful leaders need to develop.

Dr. Craig works closely with family business leaders, their consultants, and advisors, and trains and presents to members of enterprising families from most sectors and countries worldwide.
